The History

In the 1860s, gold was discovered in the Skippers Canyon area immediately behind Arthurs Point. Soon after, the area was inundated with gold prospectors looking to stake their claim and make their fortune in Skippers’ gullies and ravines. Many miners found themselves living a rough and ready life at Bullendale – an isolated mining settlement in the upper reaches of Skippers Canyon.

In 1886, the owner of Bullendale, George Bullen, introduced hydro-electric power to the settlement to power the mine’s stamper battery. Bullen's inspired decision was the first industrial use of hydro-electric power in New Zealand and firmly cemented Bullendale in New Zealand's history books.

In a nod to the area’s history, the team behind Bullendale, decided to name this new property development ‘Bullendale’.
